Background and Mission
The firm of William J. Hofto, CPA, PC began November 1, 2003 and has established a reputation for providing the highest quality of personalized financial services to individuals, small businesses and non-profit organizations. Our expertise ranges from basic tax management and accounting services to more in-depth services such as forensic investigations and litigation support. The firm is located on Main Street in downtown Carbondale, in the heart of the Roaring Fork Valley, and surrounded by the western slope of the Rocky Mountains.
Our mission is to help our clients maintain financial viability in the present while taking a proactive approach to achieve future goals. This requires open communication to reach an understanding of our clients’ needs through research and sound analysis. William J. Bill has been a certified public accountant for almost 30 years and has practiced public accounting in the Roaring Fork Valley since 1993. He specializes in tax planning and preparation for small businesses and individuals, compilation and review of financial statements, business advising, forensic investigations and litigation support services.
Bill is a graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. His career in public accounting is preceded by his diverse experience in the private sector. Bill has been the financial controller of an auto dealership, liberal arts college, manufacturer of orthopedic implants, and construction company. He is also a Certified Forensic Accountant and a QuickBooks Certified Professional Advisor.
Bill is a member of the American Institute of CPA’s, the AICPA Forensic and Valuation Services Section, the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute, and the Colorado Society of CPA’s. He is the treasurer of the Carbondale Community Chamber of Commerce, and treasurer of True Media Foundation. He is also a member of the Mount Sopris Historical Society and the Mount Sopris Rotary Club. In addition, Bill has taught local workshops on taxation and financial reporting.
Bill and his wife Patti have resided in Carbondale for twenty years and have four adult children.
Mary E. Burwell, Staff Accountant

Mary graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a concentration in accounting. After graduating, Mary began her career serving as Controller in a wide range of industries, from manufacturing to construction and real estate development. In 1995 Mary moved to the Roaring Fork Valley. Her first position here was Controller for a local general contracting firm. Two years later she was recruited by a software developer to represent their fully-integrated construction management software Master Builder®. After having her second child, Mary took two years off to spend time with her children, James, now 14 and Julia, now 9. In 2003 Mary began working as Controller for a general contractor and real estate developer located in Basalt, Colorado.
Mary has been with our firm since February, 2009 and plans to take the CPA exam in 2010. She enjoys tax planning and preparation and finds working with a wide variety of clientele stimulating.
Mary’s hobbies include photography, cooking, sewing, scrapbooking and cross country skiing.
Emily A. Schroeder, Office Manager

Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Emily graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After a few years as Assistant Manager at a Tulsa area Starbucks, she decided to make her way to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2007 for a job with a local bank.
Emily has been with our firm since January of 2010 and is looking forward to her future here. She takes pleasure in meeting and getting to know people and prides herself in her computer skills.
Emily’s hobbies include drawing, painting, graphic design, cooking, photography, computers, and video games.
